Raven Chronicles, some contests

Raven Chronicles is a possibly-overlooked market for writers and poets.  They are currently reading for their Summer 2013 issue, themed "Why we do what we do."  They want submissions of experimental or traditional work, up until the deadline of March 15th.  They offer contributors 2 copies of the issue their work appears in, and "sometimes" payment of $10 to $40, when possible.

If anyone is a member of FanStory.com or considering becoming a member, here are some upcoming contests with prizes (some up to $100) that may be of interest.  As a disclaimer, I don't know much about the site, except that it's free to join.

- Dystopian Future Story Contest: deadline February 19th
- Ghost Story Contest: deadline March 4th
- Tanka Poetry Contest: deadline June 30th
- 5-7-5 Poetry Contest: deadline July 5th
- Horror Story Writing Contest: deadline July 11th

  1. I tell you, entering contests is great for writers, I think, especially during their earlier careers.

  2. Charles - I agree, it can give you some much-needed confidence. Even once you've been "established," it can help get you back in the game if you've been out of it for a while.

  3. I used to be a member of Fanstory, once upon a time. It's not the place for me now though. Back in the day they had a free trial but then you had to pay a monthly fee to remain a member. I don't know if that is still the case, but it may be.

  4. Hi Rhonda,
I didn't delve into it too deeply, just glanced around and saw that it was free to join. But I'm sure you're right, there's probably a fee after the "trial" membership. If it was completely free, that would be great for writers -- some of those contests have $100 prizes and no entry fees.
