Speculative writing markets for reprints

A lot of writers think once you sell a piece and it hits the newstands, it's off the market. This couldn't be further from the truth. Plenty of magazines and websites will be happy to reprint your stories, poems, articles, or essays, as long as you still hold the copyright. You might as well get all the mileage you can out of your writing. Why not get paid twice for the same piece?

Here's a sampling of speculative markets that pay for reprints:

- Allegory
- Bards and Sages Quarterly
Daikaijuzine (reopens 1/1/24)
- Frozen Wavelets (temp closed)
- Neon (on hiatus)
- PodCastle (reopens 3/1/24)
- Pseudopod (reopens 8/9/24)
- Space Squid (currently closed to subs)
- Tales from the Moonlit Path (pays for fiction but not poetry)

Four paying speculative fiction markets

The following speculative fiction markets are all open now,  or opening soon.  And, they all pay.

- Freeze Frame Fiction
(courtesy of the Flash Fiction Flash newsletter)

Freeze Frame Fiction is looking for flash fiction up to 1000 words.  They pay $10 per story, and will accept simultaneous submissions (though no reprints).  The guidelines state that "stories involving vampires, zombies, or werecreatures" might be fighting an uphill battle here.

Submit via Submittable by July 31st.

(courtesy of Published to Death)

Cosmic Roots and Eldritch Shores publishes "well written original stories in science fiction, fantasy, myth, legend, fairy tales, and eldritch" and prefer shorter pieces over longer ones.  Pays 6 cents/word for unpublished fiction; 2 cents/word for reprints.

They open for submissions four times a year, for one week at a time.  The next submission window is June 21st to June 28th.

- Changelings & Fairy Rings: An Anthology of Nature Spirits & Elemental Creatures

Three Drops Press is putting together "a themed anthology in honour of the Good Folk."  The book will be pocket-sized, so the editors are looking for poems 40 lines or less and flash fiction 500 words or fewer.  Previously published submissions are allowed; simultaneous ones are not.  Payment is £3.50 UK ($5.00 US) and a PDF copy of the anthology.

The submission deadline is June 1st.

Lamplight

LampLight is a digital magazine for literary dark fiction.  The editors want "stories that are dark, literary; we are looking for the creepy, the weird and the unsettling."  Previously published stories will be considered, as long as they are not available for free somewhere else online.  Simultaneous submissions are also accepted.  Writers are paid 3 cents/word -- 1 cent/word for reprints -- up to a maximum of $150.

Submit via Submittable by June 15th.

New Poetry Market: Songs of Eretz

Songs of Eretz is a brand new poetry blog/e-zine looking for all lengths and genres of poetry.  Based on the site's content so far, it seems to have a slight bend toward science fiction and fantasy.  The editor is actively seeking poetry submissions, and he says he'll pay $7 per unpublished poem and $2 per reprint.

Twilight Times

Twilight Times, a magazine of science fiction and fantasy (including dark fantasy), reopened to submissions yesterday through August 5th.  The editors are looking for stories and poems for the Halloween issue as well as the upcoming winter issue.  Payment is $5.00 for unpublished work or $2.50 for reprints.  (If chosen for the print version rather than the e-zine, payment is one contributor's copy instead.)  For the e-zine, they'll also include a link to your website.

eBay & reprints

My wife and I are trying to make some more room in our crowded house, so we've been putting some things up for sale on eBay. This week we have a few different lots of books that someone might be interested in:

Lot of 3 John Grisham books:
- A Time to Kill
- The Broker
- A Painted House
Lot of 3 Dan Brown books:
- The Da Vinci Code
- Angels & Demons
- Deception Point
Lot of 4 Far Side books:
- The PreHistory of The Far Side: A 10th Anniversary Exhibit
- Wiener Dog Art: A Far Side Collection
- The Curse of Madame "C"
- Valley of the Far Side

All three lots have low starting prices, no reserves, and reasonable shipping costs. All of the books are in good or better condition.

And now for some reprint markets...

These magazines will buy one-time rights for your previously published horror/speculative poems:

- Illumen: pays 2¢/word for unpublished poems ($3 minimum, except scifaiku and other short forms, which get $1), 1¢/word for reprints.
- Niteblade: pays $3/poems plus a PDF copy of the issue.
- Tales of the Talisman: pays $4/poem plus a contributor's copy.
- Ghostlight: pays $4/poem (reprints not eligible for Editor's Choice).
