Dwarf Stars, train haiku anthology

Nominations are currently being taken for the 2018 Dwarf Stars Award.  You can submit your own poems or those of others -- speculative poems 10 lines or less published in 2017.  This year's editor is
Deborah P. Kolodji.

The deadline for nominations is May 15th.  SFPA members will receive the Dwarf Stars anthology in July, and voting will close on August 31st.

In non-speculative news, Jacquie Pearce is collecting haiku, tanka, rengay and haibun about trains for an upcoming anthology.  Submit published or unpublished poems by email.  Payment is one contributor's copy.  The submission deadline is June 30th.

2012 Dwarf Stars winners

Congratulations to Marge Simon, Greer Woodward, and G.O. Clark, the three winners (first place to third place, respectively) of the 2012 Dwarf Stars Awards!  All three of the winning poems are included in the 2012 Dwarf Stars Anthology, along with the other nominated poems.

Dark Discoveries, 28 Blackbirds, Dwarf Stars

Horror magazine Dark Discoveries has officially raised its pay rate to five cents per word. That's great news for all horror writers, but especially those trying to get into the HWA -- another professional market to submit to.

J. Bruce Fuller's chapbook 28 Blackbirds at the End of the World is now available for preorder at the Bandersnatch Books website. I'm pretty sure it's $8 for a copy, but I can't find that info anywhere on the site. Anyone who orders before the end of January will be entered into a raffle, and the winner will receive a copy of every book Bandersnatch publishes in 2010.

The nominations for the 2009 Dwarf Stars Award have been announced, and there are a lot of familiar names on the list, as well as many new ones. SFPA members get a copy of the Dwarf Stars anthology, which looks to have a pretty good lineup.

Dwarf Stars winners, a contest

The 2008 Dwarf Star winners have been announced... congratulations to Greg Beatty, Sonya Taaffe, and Ann K. Schwader! There were a lot of good poems to pick from this year. Deborah Kolodji and Stephen Wilson had their work cut out for them.

On the Premises holds writing contests revolving around a theme or idea. The current contest seems to lend itself well to horror stories, and there's no entry fee. The premise is: "One or more characters encounter someone, something, or some place from their past that they had good reason to believe they would never encounter again." Entries must be between 1000-5000 words, and have to be in by January 31st. Read the full guidelines here.

Atomjack, Dwarf Stars, a contest

Atomjack is an online science fiction/science fantasy magazine. Current pay rate is $10 per story/poem/article, but in 2009 all accepted works will be paid $20. They accept reprints and simultaneous submissions. Read the full guidelines for more information. To see what the editors like, check out this issue's cover pic, and "Invaders" by Mari Ness.

Atomjack is also currently seeking submissions for its "alternate future" e-anthology, titled The Butterfly Affects. Payment for the anthology is $15 per poem or flash fiction piece and $30 per short story (1,000 to 10,000 words). They will be accepting submissions through May 2009, so you still have some time.

In case you haven't heard, the table of contents for the 2008 Dwarf Stars anthology has been announced. It's quite a collection of poets, including many mainstream haiku poets that I never thought I would see in a speculative anthology. I'm not sure when copies will be mailed out to SFPA members, but if you're not a member (or you want 2 copies) you can order your copy here.

Lastly we have the 2008 Winter Moon Awards for Haiku. There is no website (as of yet) for this contest, but here are the guidelines, listed in the current Haiku Society of America newsletter:

Submit up to 10 unpublished haiku, not being submitted anywhere else, on one sheet of paper. Prizes for the top three poems are $100/$50/$25, and there is no entry fee. Send 2 copies -- one with name and address in the upper left hand corner, and one with just the poems -- to Carolyn Thomas, 7866 Hogan Circle, Hemet CA 92545. Include an SASE for results. All entries must be in hand by December 1st.
