Four paying speculative fiction markets
The following speculative fiction markets are all open now, or opening soon. And, they all pay.
- Freeze Frame Fiction

Freeze Frame Fiction is looking for flash fiction up to 1000 words. They pay $10 per story, and will accept simultaneous submissions (though no reprints). The guidelines state that "stories involving vampires, zombies, or werecreatures" might be fighting an uphill battle here.

Cosmic Roots and Eldritch Shores publishes "well written original stories in science fiction, fantasy, myth, legend, fairy tales, and eldritch" and prefer shorter pieces over longer ones. Pays 6 cents/word for unpublished fiction; 2 cents/word for reprints.
They open for submissions four times a year, for one week at a time. The next submission window is June 21st to June 28th.

Three Drops Press is putting together "a themed anthology in honour of the Good Folk." The book will be pocket-sized, so the editors are looking for poems 40 lines or less and flash fiction 500 words or fewer. Previously published submissions are allowed; simultaneous ones are not. Payment is £3.50 UK ($5.00 US) and a PDF copy of the anthology.

Writers are paid 3 cents/word -- 1 cent/word for reprints -- up to a maximum of $150.

Dwarf Stars, train haiku anthology
Nominations are currently being taken for the 2018 Dwarf Stars Award. You can submit your own poems or those of others -- speculative poems 10 lines or less published in 2017. This year's editor is
Deborah P. Kolodji.
The deadline for nominations is May 15th. SFPA members will receive the Dwarf Stars anthology in July, and voting will close on August 31st.
In non-speculative news, Jacquie Pearce is collecting haiku, tanka, rengay and haibun about trains for an upcoming anthology. Submit published or unpublished poems by email. Payment is one contributor's copy. The submission deadline is June 30th.

August 31st deadlines
August 31st is a popular day for writing deadlines. Below are some magazines that will close to submissions (temporarily) on that day.

Haiku Canada stops reading submissions for its October issue on 8/31, but they're still open. Anything sent in after the 31st will be read for the February issue.
The Seven Hills Literary Contest and Penumbra Poetry and Haiku Contests also close to submissions on August 31st.
After all these journals and contests close their submission doors, Inch will be opening theirs. Send your microfiction and short poetry to Inch on or after September 1st. They're not a paying market, but you'll get three contributor copies if your work is chosen.

Deadlines
If you were planning to submit haiku or other short poems to tinywords, today is the last day to do it until their next reading period opens up.
For anyone wanting to enter the 2013 Snapshot Press Haiku Calendar Competition, submissions must be postmarked (or emailed) by the end of the month.
Mu also closes to submissions on the 31st.
If you have haiku that you can't get in to Mu or tinywords in time, you can submit to Acorn through the end of February.

Upcoming deadlines
It's almost 2013, and to start the year off with some good publishing opportunities, here are a couple of upcoming haiku deadlines:
- Mu, An International Haiku Journal, is open to submissions for its fifth issue until January 31st, 2013. There is no payment for accepted poems, other than the joy of publication. No simultaneous submissions or previously published poems.
- tinywords is open to submissions of short poems for its next issue (unthemed). Previously published poems will be considered, but simultaneous submissions won't. The submission deadline is January 20th, 2013. There is no payment for accepted poems.
- The North Carolina Poetry Society is sponsoring a bunch of poetry contests, including the Griffin-Farlow Haiku Award. There are three prizes -- $25, $15, and $10 -- and everyone can submit one entry. There is a $3 entry fee per poem if you're not an NCPS member. The deadline for submissions is January 12th, 2013.
